Looking forward to getting more and more information from your site, I found it on Bing and it is turning into a site I visit regularly for information and insight when writing articles as they relate to my blog.
Handwriting is a difficulty often for children with Dyspraxia and DCD. Does your child have difficulties with writing, difficulties learning to type, are you not sure what pen grips to use?
Discuss and share your ideas and concerns.
Hi, I am concerned my 8 yr old son has dysgraphia. He really struggles with writing and says it hurts to write. it always seems like a big effort for him. He is really disappointed with his end of yr report. He has been assessed as level 4b for maths, 3a for reading and 2a for writing. He seems so bright and articulate and spells really well. He uses a triangle grip which helps a bit. He has had some extra private tuition this yr and extra help in class and has gone from 2c-2a over the year. I don’t know if I should worry or not. He is a bit of a dreamer, not sporty and his drawing /art skills are very immature. I discussed this with my brother who has always had awful writing and he says he has always found it painful to write.
Hi – yes my son works really hard writing – he is 6 but it is very difficult to make out what has been written, he finds it much easier using a felt tip pen – but obviously this is not acceptable to use at school – I can’t help but think in this age surely there should be some fantastic writing implement to help that could be used at school – we have tried a multitude of pencils – he is currently following the Right From The Start programme and will be receiving some intervention from his OT in the summer but any advice would be welcomed – we are in the process of setting up a local support group and so any tips on any DCD hot topics are very welcome!
Hi Debbie= re the writing- it may be a good idea to twin track and start getting him to use a keyboard. We have listed a range of free typing programmes, if you type in ‘typing’ you will find them.
Make sure he is stable when writing – feet on the floor, so he is not in an awkward position. Practice basic shapes- for 2 minutes every day – such as making loops across the page.
Clare-Sometimes pens that flow make it easier. Different children have different shape hands. National Handwriting Association have some useful information on handwriting and some good tips as well.
