Organising your workspace

Clear and sort out paperwork and other items into colour-coded or clearly labelled files and folders.

Label filing drawers using colour codes, pictures or large print.

Clearly mark drawers in terms of what is to be kept in each.

Use a pin board near your workstation to hold important information.

Use a wall planner in addition to a diary, or put all your diary and timetable into Microsoft Outlook and link this to your mobile phone or Blackberry/i-Phone

File appropriately information to be kept, and discard outdated/ irrelevant information.  Have ‘in’ and ‘out’ trays as well as a large bin so that you can sort as you go.

Ask others if you are not sure what should be kept.

Purchase additional storage facilities as required, including desk and drawer tidies or ask your line manager if these can be provided for you.

Use see-through containers or clear files to store documents with colour-coded labels or use clearly labelled coloured files for different modules and projects.

Create/use a ‘message pad’ with key words/prompts to make taking telephone messages easier.
